Candidate for the position of Vice President Education
Zara Haram Syeda
Why are you interested in becoming an Elected Officer, and what makes you an outstanding candidate for VP Education in particular?
I have loved representing the students here at UH as a School Community Officer (SCO) and want to continue to be your voice where it matters most - our education. I have met many incredible people from all walks of life and have made many lifelong connections. My goal is to continue to work for you, the students, to make sure that everyone here at UH receives the education that they deserve. Becoming the VP of education is the best way for me to continue leading change at this university, and I feel that my previous experience in student leadership roles makes me the finest candidate to represent you. What relevant skills/experience would you be able to bring to the role?
I have taken an active role within the student community since I started at UH, being a course rep in my second year and am currently an SCO.
As a student rep, I reached out to my peers to understand their concerns about our course and relayed them to relevant staff in meetings.
As an SCO, I have listened to and collated feedback from a wider cohort, and have worked with my school reps, to better represent them. I have utilised the SU representation network and presented this feedback to staff and worked towards a solution that benefited the students.
I have also organized events so that all students feel welcomed at this university.
What would you consider to be your main strengths?
Having worked with many different people and in various roles, I can adapt to the needs of different situations and respond in a levelled and practical manner. I have a very approachable persona and always make time to listen to students, no matter what. I can communicate well with a range of people and work towards our shared goal.
What would you consider to be your main weaknesses?
I am always working on my personal development and every new experience I go through allows me to grow. I would say that at this moment, I am working on my ability to manage my time, balance my priorities, and being able to delegate tasks to my team. This is something that I have seen myself improve on and will continue to do so as VP Education.
Introduce yourself! What should students know about you?
Hey! I’m Zara, an international student in the final year of my Physics BSc. I love working with the brilliant students and staff at UH and seeing the impact we have when we work together. As an SCO, I have championed students' voices on mental health, safety net policy, and assignment landscaping. I am determined to continue being the voice of students going forward.
