We’ve seen a petition from our students asking the University of Hertfordshire to cancel rent fees for students living in on-campus accommodation.
As of 3pm today, nearly 1,500 have signed the petition. We share the concerns raised and have started discussing these concerns at the most senior levels within the University. A number of other universities have already agreed to allow students to cancel rent contracts.
This situation is complex and completely unchartered. It has left our students facing unprecedented levels of hardship – financial and otherwise. However, we also recognise that many students have no option but to remain in halls - and many of the resulting costs and overheads the University bears in terms of accommodation are fixed.
We are calling on the University to give this issue the significant consideration it requires and commit to doing their utmost to exhaust any and all options it can in order to provide students options and relief where possible within the financial terms of their accommodation contracts.
