On 7th February we were very lucky to have a visit from the recently appointed Minister for Universities Chris Skidmore. Chris Skidmore is MP for Kingswood and has been in his current position since December 2018. He is responsible for everything University related with a specific focus on science, research and innovation.
Chris spent the day with the University, visiting various departments with the senior leadership team including the Vice-Chancellor. An assembled panel of elected officers, student trustees, School Community Organisers and student reps asked the new Minister probing questions regarding post study work visas, a key priority for President Activities Amal Jolly, as well as the post-18 funding review and how he will promote student enterprise. Chris also highlighted the importance of not limiting young people’s potential and encouraging as many individuals as possible to apply for University if they wish to do so.
Chris Skidmore spoke to Third Year English Literature with Creative Writing student on his visit and she had this to say:
“It was great to tell Chris about my work placement year and how I have improved my career prospects as a result. Without doubt, I feel more confident in myself after this experience and it has been one of the highlights of my course. I felt very grateful to be able to meet the new Universities Minister, special thank you to the University's Careers and Employment team for inviting me!”
With Brexit just around the corner and a crisis of mental health funding within Higher Education, the new Minister takes on an enormous task but we are looking forward to seeing what he brings to the role.
