The BAME Award Gap?

The BAME award gap refers to British BAME students compared to British white students. It measures student outcomes like-for-like based on the same entry requirements.

The Gap?

Did you know that currently BAME students are less likely to get a 2:1 or 1st than their white peers?

Eliminate the unexplained gap in degree outcomes (1sts or 2:1s) between white students and black students by 2024-25, and to eliminate the absolute gap (the gap caused by both structural and unexplained factors by 2030-31. OfS, 2018b, p.4

What are the Students' Unions goals?

  • For the BAME Award gap to be eliminated urgently
  • To lobby the university to ensure best practices is adopted across the entire university

Your Vice President Education regularly attends the BAME Student Success working group to lobby for better academic outcomes for our BAME students here are Herts.

Amy has also where possible worked with School Community Organisers (SCO's) to discuss the BAME award gap in their schools and encourage them to think about starting a project within their school of study.

Rida has collaborated with our BAME Campaigns officer to organise a Herts-wide guest speaker event with the aim of providing students from any discipline role models. The event is coming up in February so check out our events page to make sure you grab your free ticket!
