As you may know, healthcare students up and down the country have been working on the frontlines in the NHS since March to help with the COVID-19 response.

We’ve joined forces with Greenwich Students' Union and 25+ other Students' Unions across the country calling for the government to waive the debt of all healthcare students who’ve stepped up to do this vital work.

Here's what you can do to help:

Sign the open letter to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, and the Minister of State for Universities, Michelle Donelan, calling for the fee debt to be waived. Sign the letter HERE.

Write a letter to your MP, calling for public support of the campaign. You can download Greenwich's template HERE and find your MP HERE.

Tell us and the UH Healthcare students why you’re supporting them and the campaign to have debt waived. Share on social media using #SignWriteTell and #YourHertbeat.

Are you a Healthcare student with a story, or you want to share why you think this is important and help us repay our students who have stepped up and risked their lives and studies during this pandemic.

Fill in the form above to tell us your story, or send us a video telling us your story to website@hertfordshire.su, so we can show how important this campaign is.

FAQs

What is this campaign?

We’ve joined forces with Greenwich Students' Union and 28 other Students' Unions across the country calling for the government to waive the debt of students who’ve opted in to work over the pandemic.

Which students will this campaign be helping?

This campaign is specifically aimed at healthcare students who have stepped up to the frontline in the pandemic.

Who do you specifically mean when you say healthcare students?

We have just used the term healthcare students as there are 30 Students’ Unions around the UK involved whose Universities will have different courses linked with healthcare professions. This causes problems with being specific until we can get the healthcare unions and specialists involved to help us fully identify which students this will directly affect.

Right now, all we can say is this campaign will affect anyone who is a healthcare student around the UK, who has stepped up to work on the frontline in the role they were studying towards.

What about healthcare students who haven’t opted-in?

We understand that some students couldn’t opt-in either due to their year of study or other commitments. We haven’t forgotten about you. We are supporting you as Students’ Unions by engaging in conversations with our respective Universities, ensuring all students are still getting a high standard of online teaching.

We are in very exceptional circumstances. We feel that students who have had to pay for an education when they’re not getting one because they are instead working full time in the profession they are meant to be getting taught about, needs addressing.

We’re hoping this is the first step to getting more recognition for all healthcare students.

How can I get involved?

You can sign the letter to Matt Hancock and Michelle Donelan. You can write to your local MP calling for them to support the cause. You can tell us why you’re supporting the campaign, and if you’re a healthcare student currently working on the frontline you can tell us your story.

All information and access to resources can be found here.

What are the next steps?

Greenwich Students' Union will be sending off the letter to Matt Hancock and Michelle Donelan. They will also be meeting with the National Union of Students and talking to Healthcare Unions about the campaign. We will continue to promote the campaign to gain support and share the stories of our students.
